Question 1

What are superbugs?

Accepted Answer

Superbugs are bacteria that have developed resistance to multiple antibiotics, making them extremely difficult to treat. Drug-resistant infections already kill approximately 700,000 people globally each year, and without decisive action, this figure could reach 10 million by 2050, making superbugs deadlier than cancer.

Question 2

What is FDA priority review for antibiotics?

Accepted Answer

FDA priority review is an accelerated approval pathway that cuts the standard timeline from 10-12 months down to just 6-8 months. GSK recently received this designation for its new gonorrhoea treatment, signalling regulatory urgency around antimicrobial resistance and faster potential market access for breakthrough antibiotics.

Question 3

Why did big pharma abandon antibiotic development?

Accepted Answer

Major pharmaceutical companies treated antibiotics as economically unattractive compared to chronic disease treatments. They preferred developing drugs patients take for years rather than antibiotics taken for just a week. This short-sighted approach left the field open for smaller biotech firms with innovative solutions.

Question 4

How to invest in targeting superbugs stocks?

Accepted Answer

You can invest in antibiotic development companies through Nemo's Targeting Superbugs theme, which offers commission-free investing and fractional shares starting from just £1. The theme includes companies like Acurx Pharmaceuticals (ACXP), SPERO Therapeutics (SPRO), and Iterum Therapeutics (ITRM) developing breakthrough antimicrobial treatments.

Question 5

Are antibiotic stocks risky investments?

Accepted Answer

Yes, biotech investing carries substantial risks including clinical trial failures, regulatory delays, and pricing pressures. However, the combination of urgent medical need, regulatory fast-tracking, and limited competition creates compelling opportunities for companies that successfully develop effective antimicrobial treatments.

Question 6

Best antibiotic development companies to buy?

Accepted Answer

Key players include Acurx Pharmaceuticals (ACXP), which develops novel mechanisms targeting bacterial DNA replication, SPERO Therapeutics (SPRO) focusing on potentiator technology, and Iterum Therapeutics (ITRM) advancing treatments for complicated urinary tract infections and resistant bacterial diseases.

Question 7

Why invest in antibiotic stocks now?

Accepted Answer

The convergence of urgent medical need, accommodating regulatory pathways like FDA priority review, and a relatively uncrowded competitive landscape makes antibiotic stocks increasingly attractive. Companies that succeed could capture enormous market share with high barriers to entry and desperate unmet need.

Question 8

When will superbug crisis peak?

Accepted Answer

The superbug crisis is already here, with antimicrobial resistance killing 700,000 people annually. Without decisive action, deaths could reach 10 million by 2050. However, recent regulatory milestones like GSK's FDA priority review suggest the industry is finally responding to this critical healthcare challenge.

Question 9

What makes new antibiotics different from old ones?

Accepted Answer

Today's antibiotic developers use sophisticated understanding of bacterial resistance mechanisms, pioneering entirely new approaches rather than tweaking existing drug classes. They're developing novel mechanisms that make resistance development extremely difficult and can restore effectiveness against resistant strains.

Question 10

How does Nemo make antibiotic investing accessible?

Accepted Answer

Nemo offers commission-free investing in the Targeting Superbugs theme with fractional shares starting from just £1. As an ADGM-regulated platform, Nemo provides AI-driven research and accessible thematic investing, allowing you to participate in the fight against antimicrobial resistance with small amounts.
