The 40 Trillion Won Signal
When a tech firm issues a press release, I usually roll my eyes and wait for the corporate jargon. But when a South Korean chipmaker quietly announces a 40 trillion won share buyback, I sit up and pay attention. SK Hynix is not trying to sell you a dream. They are sending a very clear, very loud signal to the market. The artificial intelligence memory business is overflowing with cash.
To me, this is the most misunderstood part of the current tech boom. Everyone fixates on the glamorous chip designers in California. We tend to forget about the plumbing. High bandwidth memory is the essential infrastructure that sits inside every major processing accelerator. Without it, these much hyped systems simply cannot function. They would be sports cars without fuel lines. This historic capital return programme suggests the memory cycle might not be peaking just yet. Companies do not authorise unprecedented buybacks when they think the party is over.
