For what feels like an eternity, we’ve been told that Artificial Intelligence is the future. A glorious, world-changing future that always seemed to be just around the corner, much like a London bus you’ve just missed. I’ve lost count of the breathless presentations and jargon-filled white papers I’ve sat through. But then, something rather solid and refreshingly simple happened. A company actually made a staggering amount of money from it.
The company in question is Palantir, a firm once better known for its secretive work with governments than for its commercial prowess. They recently posted a quarterly revenue figure that topped £1 billion. Now, I’m a cynical man, but even I have to admit that’s a number with a certain gravitas. It’s not theoretical value or projected growth, it’s actual cash, paid by actual businesses for a service that, it seems, actually works.
This isn’t just a good quarter for one company. To me, this is the starting pistol for the commercial AI revolution. It proves that the technology has crawled out of the research labs and into the boardroom. It shows that businesses are now willing to write very, very large cheques for AI solutions that can solve their problems, streamline their operations, and ultimately, improve their bottom line. The abstract has become concrete.
When a moment like this happens, my first thought isn’t about the gold miner. It’s about the fellow selling the shovels, the pickaxes, and the sturdy denim trousers. The real, enduring fortunes in any gold rush are often made by those supplying the essential tools. And in the AI gold rush, the ecosystem is vast.
Think about it. Palantir’s clever software doesn’t run on hopes and dreams. It runs on specialised hardware. That’s where a company like NVIDIA comes in. They design the graphics processing units, the silicon shovels, that are the undisputed workhorses of the AI world. Without their chips, the entire enterprise would grind to a halt.
And where does all this computational heavy lifting take place? Not in some dusty server room in the basement. It happens in the cloud. This is the domain of giants like Microsoft and Alphabet. They are the digital landlords of this new frontier, renting out vast, powerful infrastructure through their Azure and Google Cloud platforms. They provide the land, the plumbing, and the electricity for the entire AI economy.
Seeing a number with nine zeroes attached does tend to focus the mind, doesn’t it? The temptation is to find the ‘next Palantir’ and throw your money at it. But let’s pour a little cold water on that idea. The technology sector is notoriously volatile. Today’s market darling can very quickly become tomorrow’s cautionary tale.
The valuations for many of these companies are already priced for a level of perfection that is, frankly, a rather rare commodity in the real world. Competition is fierce, and the technological edge can be fleeting. This is why I believe it’s less about trying to pick one lucky winner and more about understanding the entire ecosystem.
