The turf war. Walmart is using its massive physical footprint to hijack everyday orders. The recent Walmart Subway partnership and Walmart Dunkin delivery deals mean the retail giant is quietly fighting the pure delivery apps. It is a harsh wake-up call for the entire sector.

Every single one of those stores can act as a local fulfilment centre.
For a delivery business, distance is the absolute enemy of profit. Fewer miles mean lower fuel costs, faster turnaround times, and happier drivers. Uber Eats and DoorDash have to rely on a scattered patchwork of independent restaurants. Walmart essentially owns the motorway. They do not need to rent lanes on someone else's road. When you bolt habitual purchases, like a morning coffee or a quick lunch, onto an existing grocery run, the economics shift.
Now, you might be asking if a supermarket delivering doughnuts is a genuine threat to Silicon Valley. I think the answer depends entirely on the type of order. Walmart is probably not going to ruin your Friday night artisan sushi delivery. But what about the mundane, everyday top-ups?
If Walmart starts siphoning off those repetitive orders, the pure-play delivery platforms could face a serious headache. Delivery apps survive on razor-thin margins. Their entire model relies on keeping drivers constantly busy within a tight radius. If those crucial, gap-filling orders disappear into a Walmart carrier bag, the marginal cost for the apps gets heavier.
