The Domino Effect of a Single Glitch
Let’s be brutally honest. For a small online retailer, an outage like this is catastrophic. Imagine you own a lovely little shop, but one morning you find a third party has inexplicably bolted your doors shut. That’s precisely what happened. Customers couldn't browse, they couldn't buy, and they certainly couldn't be impressed by your slick service. They just went elsewhere. The financial cost is one thing, and it runs into the millions per hour for larger players, but the damage to trust is another beast entirely.
This single point of failure, this blind faith in one colossal provider, has suddenly been exposed as a rather naive strategy. It seems to me that boardrooms across the country are now having some very uncomfortable conversations about resilience. The era of simply picking the cheapest cloud provider and hoping for the best is, I suspect, well and truly over.
