The Silicon Sleight of Hand That Could Redefine AI Capex Risk
Call me an old cynic, but whenever a corporate titan begins shifting billions of pounds worth of kit off its balance sheet, my eyebrows twitch.
According to reports in the Financial Times, Amazon has quietly transferred roughly eight billion dollars worth of Nvidia processors into an external vehicle backed by third-party capital. The cloud giant still gets to run the silicon inside its data centres, but the staggering capital expenditure does not clutter its own books.
It is the financial equivalent of leasing an executive jet instead of buying one.
Accounting magic cannot change the underlying economics.
To me, this financial manoeuvring reveals just how brutally expensive the generative artificial intelligence arms race has become. Even the wealthiest cash machines on Earth are sweating under the strain of continuous, multi-billion-pound hardware upgrades.
