The Supply Chain Domino Effect
When Boeing sneezes, its supply chain catches a cold. When Boeing ramps up production, its suppliers are supposed to see a windfall. But not all suppliers are created equal.
Take Spirit AeroSystems, for example. Spirit is the tier-one supplier that builds the 737 fuselage. It is the single largest structural component of the aircraft. Their relationship with Boeing is about as direct as it gets. If Boeing decides to build more planes, Spirit must build more fuselages.
You might think this makes Spirit an obvious winner. I would urge caution. Spirit has a deeply complicated recovery story of its own. They have battled relentless quality control issues, intense financial pressures, and a symbiotic dependency on Boeing that leaves them incredibly vulnerable. Spirit's margin recovery hinges entirely on Boeing achieving, and more importantly sustaining, higher production rates. Any slip-up on the assembly line could crush Spirit's earnings. It is a high-wire act.
Then you have TransDigm, which occupies a structurally different, and frankly much smarter, position in the market.
TransDigm makes proprietary aerospace components. Crucially, many of these parts carry borderline monopolistic aftermarket pricing power. Once a TransDigm component is designed into an airframe, airlines have virtually no alternative source when it needs replacing.
They hold the keys, and they know how to charge for access.
As the MAX fleet slowly grows, TransDigm’s aftermarket revenue opportunity expands exponentially. Yes, a broader MAX production ramp increases the volume of parts flowing out of their factories today. But the aftermarket angle is the true prize. An aircraft entering service now will generate demand for spare parts for the next twenty to thirty years. That long-term revenue tail is a compounding machine.
Beyond these two, the broader network is filled with specialist manufacturers. They make everything from advanced composites to precision-machined titanium. A sustained Boeing recovery sends demand signals rippling through this entire brittle ecosystem.
