Let’s be honest with ourselves. Every investor, deep down, harbours a fantasy. It’s the one where we stumble upon the next Amazon in its garage phase, chuck a few quid at it, and spend the rest of our days sailing a yacht made of solid gold. It’s a lovely thought, isn’t it? The reality, of course, is that for every one of those stories, there are a thousand tales of woe, of money vanishing into thin air on some ‘revolutionary’ new idea.
And yet, the allure of the frontier never fades. We are drawn to companies that promise not just to grow, but to fundamentally change the world. To me, this kind of investing is less about spreadsheets and more about storytelling. You’re buying a ticket to a show, and you have absolutely no idea if it’s going to be a masterpiece or a catastrophic flop.
Right now, the stage is occupied by some particularly dramatic actors. We have companies trying to turn space into a holiday destination, others building digital casinos in everyone’s pockets, and a few trying to literally rewrite our DNA to cure diseases. It sounds like the plot of a science fiction novel, which should be your first clue about the level of risk involved.
Take Virgin Galactic. The idea of commercial space flight is undeniably cool. Paying customers have actually been to the edge of space. It’s a phenomenal technical achievement. But is it a business? I’m not so sure. The capital required is astronomical, the safety margins are terrifyingly slim, and the target market is, for now, a handful of the world’s wealthiest individuals. One bad headline, one technical glitch, and the whole enterprise could come crashing back to Earth, both literally and financially.
Then you have the digital gaming world, with companies like DraftKings at the forefront. The logic seems simple enough. As more American states legalise sports betting, the market grows, and DraftKings is perfectly positioned to hoover up the cash. It’s a compelling narrative driven by regulatory change.
But let’s not get carried away. The same governments that grant these licences can just as easily slap on punitive taxes or change the rules overnight. Competition is also ferocious. Every casino operator and tech giant with a spare billion is trying to get a piece of this pie. Believing this is a one-way bet is naive. It’s a crowded field, and not everyone can be a winner.
Perhaps the purest gamble of all lies in biotechnology. A company like Rocket Pharmaceuticals isn’t just selling a product, it’s betting on a scientific hypothesis. They are developing gene therapies for rare diseases, which is incredibly noble and, if successful, could be monumentally profitable.
The key word there is ‘if’. The path for any new drug is a minefield of clinical trials, regulatory approvals, and unforeseen complications. For every one that succeeds, countless others fail, taking billions in investor capital with them. Investing here is not for the faint of heart. It is, in essence, buying a very expensive, very complicated lottery ticket. The odds are long, but the potential jackpot is transformative.
What I find interesting is the idea of bundling these disparate gambles. Grouping these high-stakes ventures into a single theme, like the one found in the Thrill & Excitement, is a fascinating approach. It doesn’t remove the risk, of course, but it does spread the hope around. Instead of betting on one moonshot, you’re taking a small piece of several. It’s a strategy that acknowledges the high chance of failure for any single company but hopes that just one of them might strike gold. This isn't for your pension pot, mind you. It's for the small slice of your portfolio that you can afford to lose, but hope you won't.
