The Nuveen Select Tax-Free Income Portfolio (NXP) is a type of investment known as a closed-end fund. Its primary goal is to provide investors with a regular stream of income that is exempt from regular US federal income tax, while also aiming to preserve the original capital invested. To achieve this, the fund invests at least 80% of its assets in municipal bonds. These are essentially loans to local governments to fund public projects. The fund offers a diversified portfolio of these bonds, managed by its investment adviser, Nuveen Fund Advisors, LLC. It's important for potential investors to be aware that up to 20% of the fund’s assets can be invested in bonds that are considered below investment grade, which may carry a higher level of risk.
