The New Digital Iron Curtain
What we're seeing is the rise of something I call "data nationalism". It’s a simple, if rather unsettling, idea. Countries are waking up and deciding they want their citizens' data to stay within their own borders, managed by their own companies, and subject to their own laws. The days of a truly global, borderless internet might be numbered. TikTok is simply the first major domino to fall.
The task ahead is monumental. Imagine trying to rebuild a jumbo jet, piece by piece, whilst it's still flying with 170 million passengers on board. That’s the scale of what’s required. TikTok USA has to create an entirely new technology stack, from servers to security protocols, proving beyond any doubt that it is completely separate from its Chinese parent. Oracle, of course, saw the pound signs. They’re providing the cloud infrastructure, the digital foundations for this new empire. But they can’t possibly do it all themselves.
